Number format: this calculator uses German notation throughout — a comma is the decimal separator and a dot groups thousands. “1.234,56” means one thousand two hundred thirty-four euros and fifty-six cents. The figures come from German tax law, so they are shown the way German authorities write them.

Civil service medical allowance rate (Beihilfebemessungssatz)

The share of medical costs borne by the employer; the remainder is covered by private insurance.

In plain language

German civil servants have part of their medical costs reimbursed directly by their employing authority — usually half, more with several children. For the rest they take out private insurance that covers only that remainder and is therefore cheaper than full cover. One thing matters for this calculator: the percentage changes nothing in the calculation. What counts is the premium you actually pay — and you enter that yourself.

In detail

The medical allowance rate determines the share of eligible expenses borne by the employing authority (§ 80 BBG for the federal level, plus the allowance regulations of the states). The usual rates are 50 % for the civil servant, 70 % from two qualifying children onwards and 80 % for children themselves; the rates differ between the federal government and the states. Private health insurance covers the remaining share (“residual cost cover”). In this application the rate is purely informational and enters no calculation — for a substantive reason: the premium you enter is already the one you pay after the allowance. Multiplying it by the rate would deduct the allowance a second time.

Worked example

A worked example with figures would be an invention here: the premium for residual cost cover depends on the age at entry, the tariff and the health assessment, and cannot be stated in general terms. What can be shown is the effect in the calculator: at 4.000 € gross with an entered premium of 400 €, the net pay is 2.947,67 € — regardless of whether the allowance rate is entered as 50 or 70 percent. The rate appears in the result so the entry stays traceable, not because it calculates anything.

In brief

Purely informative — it enters no calculation, because the premium entered is already the one you pay yourself.

Legal basis: § 80 BBG, allowance regulations of the federal states · as at 2026
