Number format: this calculator uses German notation throughout — a comma is the decimal separator and a dot groups thousands. “1.234,56” means one thousand two hundred thirty-four euros and fifty-six cents. The figures come from German tax law, so they are shown the way German authorities write them.

Children under 25

For each child from the second to the fifth, the long-term care contribution falls by 0,25 contribution rate points.

In plain language

From the second child onwards long-term care insurance becomes cheaper: by 0,25 percentage points for each child under 25, up to the fifth child at most. The first child does not count towards this — it only removes the surcharge for the childless. And unlike that removal, the reduction lasts only while the children are younger than 25.

In detail

For the second to the fifth qualifying child under 25, the employee's share of the long-term care contribution is reduced by 0,25 percentage points each (§ 55 (3) sentences 2 to 4 SGB XI). The reduction affects the employee's share alone; the employer's share stays at 1,8 % — the statute says so expressly. It ends at the close of the month in which the child concerned turns 25, so unlike parenthood it is time-limited. In Saxony the employee's share is half a percentage point higher across the board (2,3 % instead of 1,8 %); the reduction is subtracted from it as everywhere else.

Worked example

4.000 € gross, tax class 1, employee's long-term care contribution: with one child 72,00 €, with two 62,00 €, with three 52,00 €, with four 42,00 €, with five 32,00 €. A sixth child changes nothing — the reduction stops at the fifth. Between one and five children there are therefore 40,00 € a month.

In brief

The reduction applies only to the employee's share, never the employer's.

Legal basis: § 55 Abs. 3 Satz 4 SGB XI · as at 2026
